House Rent Allowance (HRA) is a component of salary given by employers to help employees pay rent for accommodation. HRA is provided in addition to basic salary and other allowances. It's fully taxable if received but eligible for tax deduction if certain conditions are met, such as actual rent paid and place of work.
HRA exemption is the minimum of: Actual HRA received, 50% of Basic+DA (metro cities) or 40% (non-metro cities), or Actual rent paid minus 10% of Basic+DA. Condition: Rent should exceed 10% of Basic+DA. Exemption not applicable if living in own house. Must have rent receipts as proof.
